At the age of 47, he retired in April 2013 after an illustrious career. However, Sir Hoy, who is also the official ambassador for the event, will be present in the city for the entire duration of 10 days, as he observes the monumental cycling championship unfold.
Hailing from Edinburgh, the Olympic star exhibited his talent in sports from a young age. By 1996, he had earned a spot on the British national squad, swiftly securing a world championship medal in 1999. This marked the initial milestone in a remarkable journey.
Throughout his career, he etched his name in history, serving as a distinguished representative for both Great Britain and Scotland. His accomplishments include an impressive tally of four Olympic golds, eleven world titles, and two Commonwealth triumphs, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication.
Additionally, the athlete garners affection not only within the realm of sports but also throughout Scotland, evidenced by a facility in Glasgow named in his honour – the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Positioned within the Emirates Arena in the eastern part of the city, near Celtic Park, this velodrome holds the distinction of being Scotland’s inaugural indoor cycling track and just the fifth of its kind in Britain.
