Former politician and British broadcaster Nigel Farage has come under scrutiny for “racial slur” against Sikhs by an Indian diaspora organisation.
Sharing a clip from his news coverage on GB News, the Indian Council of Scotland expressed its disappointment over Farage playing a Tiktok video of what seems to be people of Sikh background crossing the English Channel by a small boat and insulting them.
In a post shared on Facebook, it wrote, “The Indian Council of Scotland and United Kingdom have issued in writing a full complaint to and against GB News and its presenter Nigel Farage regarding the racial slur of Sikhs in relation to what appeared to be Sikh refugees in a boat crossing the sea to the UK.
“What is also disturbing and disgraceful, is the racial slur text wording that GB News thought was fine to show on screen as headline stating –
“’WTF…. SIKH ING ASYLUM’
“This is totaly unacceptable. We at the Indian Council of Scotland/UK would like to point out that the Sikh Indian community fought bravely in both World War I and II in which over 40- 60,000 lives were lost and many more injured for the freedom of Great Britain.
“Sikhism is an intergral part of Indian culture and roots stem from defending the way of life across India, such as Buddhism and Hinduism.
“If no public apology is given then we shall go to the regulator.”
The Indian Council of Scotland also shared a link to the video as evidence. In the video, Farage is heard saying, “You’ve been used in the past to the Albanians, this is a boat full of Sikhs. Yes, they’re all coming from India. What a good day out they’re having.”
He then went on to add, “Basically, it doesn’t matter where you come from in the world, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a legitimate claim to be a genuine refugee or not, it’s come on down, cross the English Channel, pay a trafficker and you will be allowed to stay.”
The council said in a statement, “The Indian Council of Scotland and the United Kingdom have taken part in a interview with the National Newspaper in which we stand in solidarity with the Sikh community with regards to the wrong done by GB News/Nigel Farage.
“No community/faith or culture should be insulted in this way.
“We at the Indian Council of Scotland and the United Kingdom are against Illegal immigration, however it is not acceptable for racial slur against the Sikh community or any community.”
Farage concluded his report by attacking the Conservatives by pointing out that even though they will be able to fix the problem of the economic crisis, the issue of illegal migration will cost them the upcoming general election.
