Plot & Analysis

Story Overview

Sasaki Ryohei, the second son of the Sasaki family, is a high school student who lives in Shimane. He has just been chosen to be the vice captain of the youth soccer club. Setting his sights on participating in the prefectural championship, Ryohei practices every day with his buddies. Because his mother, Moeko, spends all her time caring for his bedridden younger brother, Shohei, who has had a long hospitalisation for an incurable illness since the age of three, he leads life with his father, Hiroshi, like a single-father household. One day, Ryohei has a severe headache and is brought to the hospital. His elder brother, Teppei, also hurries over from his workplace in Kyoto. Ryohei is diagnosed with an acute brain tumour from the test results. His doctor tries to remove the tumour immediately, but it is located in the deepest part of the brain and cannot be taken out. The surgery is stopped. The family is told by the doctor that Ryohei will not live long and they despair. However, Ryohei musters the strength to say, “I’ll win. I’ll beat the illness.” Given a push by his words, the Sasakis try to stay positive. His parents desperately search for ways to turn his condition around, and as a result, it is decided that Ryohei will undergo surgery at Ishikawa General Medical Centre. Teppei also quits his job and makes the decision to look after Shohei in Shimane on behalf of Moeko. This allows Ryohei and their mother to start living at an Ishikawa hospital. Despite the irony of the situation, Ryohei’s illness gives mother and son time face-to-face for the first time… At that moment, Nagata who coaches the club which Ryohei belongs to, encourages the members to aim to get through the preliminaries of the prefectural championship. But Ryohei’s good friends Aritake Junta and Kuroki Toru have lost their fighting spirit because of his absence. Hiroshi finds Aritake and the rest who have skipped practice and brings them to the hospital where Ryohei is warded. They see Ryohei working hard at rehabilitation after a successful surgery in Ishikawa. The members are moved by Ryohei’s tenacity, and the soccer club makes it through the first round of preliminaries for the prefectural championship. Then, they finally reach the deciding match…
