Rishi Sunak, 42, has become the UK’s first British Asian prime minister after fellow contender Penny Mordaunt pulled out of the leadership race.
Jake Berry, the Conservative party chair, has put out this statement about Rishi Sunak’s election as Tory leader: “I’d like to congratulate Rishi Sunak on becoming the new leader of our party. Now is the time for the whole party to come together and unite four-square behind Rishi, as he gets on with the vital work of tackling the challenges we face as a country. The time for internal debates is well and truly over, and led by Rishi Sunak, I know we can and will deliver on the priorities of the British people.”
Several leaders across the country also congratulated Sunak on the historic appointment making him the youngest to take up the top job in modern times.
It has been reported that Sunak will not make the same mistake as former PM Liz Truss by appointing his loyalists to the cabinet and will instead strike a balance by selecting members best fit for the job.
Sunak now faces the responsibility of reuniting the deeply divided Conservative Party and steer the country safely through the worsening economic crisis.
